Purina has a lot of good supplements to top dress for your cattle. They also have a lot of good minerals if your steer is lacking anything. I personally have been a fan of the Champion Drive when I am feeding sheep to show, or the fitter 35 when I needed my goats to stay their weight they were.
When feeding a show steer I start them on Power Fuel only 4 ounces twice a day and I play around with it because you can tell when they are getting too much fat cover. Sometimes this top dress can affect the way they are eating so you want to make sure they are keeping their appetite up.

Showmanship tips
This video shows a lot of important tips on showmanship, as you will learn showmanship is one of the most important things when it comes to showing cattle or any species.
THE FIRST SHOW
When you finally get your animal to the first show, things may not be that easy. For me the first show is always a mess and there are a lot of nerves that go with it.
This past weekend I took my steer to his first show and I was very nervous, I wasn't sure how he was going to cooperate or what he was going to do. My biggest fear is from my animal to get away from me.
As I got to the show and unloaded him off the trailer he was very alert with everything, you are the showman need to stay calm, they can feel your nerves through the show halter and if you are going to act 'off' they are going to as well. I can't stress enough that you need to STAY CALM. The animal only knows you at these shows.
Going to other shows besides your county fair really benefits the animal, when they go to their first show they are going to end up losing about 50 pounds on the way to the show because they aren't use to being trailered. They will be super alert about everything, there is a lot of commotion that goes on. the more extra shows your steer goes to, the more they will get use to it all.

Hair care
Hair care is a huge priority. After rinsing your steer off you want to apply some kind of spray that helps with conditioning and hair growth. In the warmer months it can be very challenging to keep hair on your steer. Make sure that you are rinsing, brushing, and applying a spray. Then you want to keep them in a cool area. Make sure there are fans in their area!
The mixed I recommend is something I have been using for years. Get a regular spray bottle, fill it up an inch with veterinarian liniment, an inch with rag oil, and fill the rest up with show sheen. Apply this everyday! spray all over the animal.

Feeds
Feed is very important!
There are many different kinds of feeds that you can get, I recommend you to find the dealers that are in your area. Once you find a local dealer you want to do some research on each feed and what they do, every feed does something different.

Daily haircare everyday!
You will constantly hear that winning a show starts with the work you put in at home. The question is what does this work entail? A major part of that is the presentation of your cattle. Skin and hair health is extremely important!
Rinse you steer off everyday that you can. Soap is not always important, it really depends on where you live and your climate. After you rinse, use a comb to brush the hair forward toward the head. All the hair on the steer such as legs belly top! You want their hair trained to always go that direction.

Rope halters
When you get your calf home you should be around them everyday, a couple hours at least. The animal needs to get use to you and its surroundings. One of the biggest things you don't want to do is touch its head, avoid the head area because that is going to make the animal 'heady'. If your animal becomes heady they will try and hit you with their head and won't want to stand still in the show arena.
Make sure you are trying to put a rope halter on your animal everyday and tie him. keep his head tied up high, this gets the animal trained to walk with its head up. Get the steer to cooperate with putting a halter on and tiring him up before you try and walk him.
